The sound systems fitted in automobiles can be described by the term of car-audio. Little difference there is in the stock car audio system which refers to one that was specified by the manufacturer when the car is built. On the other side custom car audio installations can involve everything from the upgrade of the radio to a full customization of a car based around its audio equipments like car stereos and CD changers.

Most commonly used audio equipment is the radio/tape player/CD player/DVD Player which is generically described as a Head unit. Recent developments in head unit technology have been the addition of CD players with MP3, WMA, AAC, and USB, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support.

A lot of modern cars have at least a CD player or CD recorder and some have the option of installing a car stereo CD changer, that keeps multiple disks either in the head unit or in a separate one usually placed in a trunk / console. The principal kinds of CD changers are External or Internal Cartridges, or Carousel CD changers.

Stereophonic sound is commonly referred to as stereo and it is the reproduction of sound wherein two or more independent audio channels are used to create the same effect as hearing natural sound heard from different directions, same as that heard in natural hearing. Car audio stereos usually employ 2-channel sound recording and sound reproduction using data for more than one speaker at the same time.

When car audio systems had only one speaker, it was placed in the middle of the dashbaord, with perforation through the front of the dashboard allowing the music to be heard. Now that stereo systems are standard, car audio speakers are placed in less standardized positions, such as in the doors and under the rear shelves. A higher end system should place speakers in kick panel enclosures, to allow the driver more comfort with better sound.

To drive the speakers you got to have an amplifier. This gives power to the music you are listening. A good car audio speaker system must have an amplifier, which is its very important component. Be sure that the total handling capacity of the speaker which is connected to the amplifier is greater than the power amplifier.

Custom car audio installation can involve anything from upgrading the radio to a full-blown customization. CD players/ CD recorders are standard in most vehicles. The most common types of car stereo CD changers are External Cartridge, Internal Cartridge and Carousel CD changers. Stereo uses two or more audio channels so that the sound appears to come from various directions. Car audio stereos typically use two channels, each providing data for several speakers at the same time. To drive car audio speakers you got to have an amplifier. Be sure that the total handling capacity of the speaker which is connected to the amplifier is greater than the power amplifier.
